Brizzle Boys, Innit

Cole Blaq's creations are prolific and run the entire gamut: mecha, speeders, vignettes, steampunk, and so on. What particularly intruiges me about his work though is his color sense - every creation has a vivid color 'theme'. And his photography is really top-notch, too.

One lovely deviation from the norm is his collection of spindly insects...

So it seems we both have an interest in entymology, a love of strong colors, and apparently the same home town too! (...and maybe the same taste for curried chips, I wonder?)

Also check out his zany Audiobot, complete with tweeter babies and massive concealed illegal Ibithan rave party, innit...

This is what I'm talking about

The mini-fig menace claims another victim. This time Nick Buchanan was on the receiving end of their vicious streak. Fortunately he was able to escape, because it turns out these little buggers are actually as dumb as stumps!

Help us stamp out these troublesome pests once and for all. Call your local branch of Terminix or Orkin and petition them to extend their services to include mini-figs. And nuns. And bacon.

I hate bacon.

"Roi, Roi!"

MisaQa presents "Spring Promenade". A well-to-do Edwardian period French family enjoys an afternoon "constitutional" with a set of rather fiesty pets...

Madame and her Pomeranian

The little mademoiselle and her Yorky

The little monsieur and his Bulldog

...all completely adorable, as ever.

Ghoul-ality not Ghoul-antity

Proving you don't need that many bricks to create something interesting, Rong Yiren say "BooOooOOOooOoooo!"

Hang on, does the one on the right have bunches and bows? Now that's scary! As the song goes, "Bet she's not your Ghoul-friend!".

Sweet Fancy Moses!

The Brick Testament, grand opus of 'The Rev' Brendan Powell Smith, has finally caught up to the Book of Revelations. Which I suppose means the end is nigh??

Either way, it certainly means vast opportunities for some highly imaginative and hard core Lego interpretations of the Apocalypse! And boy, the end of the world never looked so kick-ass! I think this must have been the drug-induced big-budget imagery that the Book's original writers envisioned. I'm actually quite looking forward to the end now, assuming I don't end up in the "one third" category that seems rather prevelant throughout the text!

Don't forget to check out the pictures of what heaven looks like (...bloody hell!) and all the other rather bizarre stuff that would probably be questionable if taken out of context!

Mote of Dust

Wishing a hippy happy Earth Day, to tree-huggers everywhere!

Please remember to use your planet carefully: follow instructions; replace batteries as needed; only use for intended purpose.

Otherwise one day you may wake up to find this...

Turned into this...

...which would a totally un-Happening thing.

"Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum, I smell the blood of a Lego man!"

This great big scary Ogre by "Big Daddy" (Nelson Yrizarry) caught my eye...

...and the eternally running-away Viking warrior is clearly universal theme!

Lego Chemistry 101

I learned a very interesting and important lesson today, the hard way: When using ink remover on Lego, you should be aware that it also removes the Lego!

The Bouncing Burglar

SlyOwl reminds us that even Miniland is not immune to crime problems, although not suprisingly these are centered around comical stereotypes with hilarious tactics!

(Love the face, btw - nice work!)

Stop press: Giant mutant Cheshire cat spotted in rural Japan!

Nothing Miyazaki related is going to go un-noticed here, especially not when Helljin brings us this lovely big (playable?) model of the CatBus.

(...and if you don't know what the CatBus is, then, well, ugh, its just not going to work out between us - I think we should start seeing other blogs!)

Moment of Zen (Sandworm)

Thanks to Rocko, "we have wormsign, the likes of which even God has never seen!"

Moment of Zen (Fairy)

Ok, right now there is very little happening in the Legosphere that floats my boat. I blame spring break! Hmm, guess its time to find my happy place (= classic MOCs). So, here is your first Moment of Zen, courtesy of Moko.

Eleanor Rigbrick

Many eons ago, I remember seeing the first TV airing of the wonderfully trippy and surreal Beatles movie Yellow Submarine. This year marks exactly 40 years (omg!) since the release of that movie's soundtrack album.

And since Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band shows up in that movie, what more tenuous better way to segue to Thomas Main's excellent interpretation of the Sgt Pepper album cover. I think he really nailed it with Ringo here!

Happy Evil!

When Tito0o0o is not busy devising deliciously unpleasant deaths for mini-figs, he is dwelling on happier things, such as how the EASTER BUNNY IS PURE EVVVVVIIIILLL!

Or showing us that even robots have to heed the call of nature...

Robots taking dumps. Ok, I have offically lowered the tone of this blog!

You know, for kids

If you're family is anything like mine, then every trip to your local Lego store is probably dominated by your kids staring enviously for 30 minutes at the latest gigantic Star Yawns $200 mega-ship set (you know, the one with that really rare mini-fig, the one with a slightly different colored pattern on his hat).

So what better way to get back at inspire them than to attend the monthly Lego store "Mini Model Build" events. Each month they show kids between the ages of 6 and 14 how to build a cool little model dreampt up by the Lego designers. And the best part is that each kid gets to take their completed model home, for free!

This month my two snagged themselves a rather evil looking Easter Bunny...

Some useful tips about these events...

  • Check the Lego web site to find out when your store is hosting each event.

  • Come early and prepared to wait in line at least an hour (its popular). Bring snax!

  • Only kids can participate! So don't bother unless you are a kid, can rustle up some kids, or can pass yourself off as a kid.

  • Make sure you know what bizarre queuing or ticketing system the staff are using. It will probably be insane, poorly explained, and involve playing cards.
Sadly we missed March's leprachaun model, but are looking forward to the tractor later this April, and the flower pot in May.

Don't be soft: Have a fight!

I wonder which of these two guys from felixisgr8 actually won the fight?

Somehow I can't imagine this turning out to be a particularly manly melee. I bet it was mostly slapping and name calling - plus some awesome posturing, looks like!

"Take THAT, you fiend!"
"No, it is you who will take THIS!"
"I will totally vanquish you."
"You are in error, I will be victorious"
(etc)

But at least their secret identities were preserved, which is the important thing...

The smell of serenity

Presenting "Secret Scent" by edulyoung...

What? No, I wasn't about say anything. Just standing here inhaling the ocean breeze, enjoying a brief moment of Zen. Nope, no idea who the guy is, or what he's up to. Perhaps he's just taking the sea air too? Mmmmm, ahhhhhhhh...

Pocket Monster

Not satisfied with already having created a famously glorious bust of the Predator (some movie, I don't know, apparently they use the jungle), Mister Zumbi decided to go one better and try it all over again at a completely different scale. After all, less is more, right? Well, I think the result is kind of cute. Though I imagine it'd bite your finger off if you got too close - and then of course polish your knuckle bone and use it as a trophy!

Bigger is better

Ok, so this may seem like an attempt at an off-topic April Fools post, since right now you're staring at a picture of a Lego mini-fig (spit!). And you know what I think about those little imps!

But look again. This is not a mini-fig, its a "big-fig"! Its a fully working, customizable, posable, foot-tall replica of a mini fig (in this instance, a classic pirate theme captain, probably the least odious signature fig I can remember, arghhh).

Count Blockula, you are a genius! I have to admire the technical and artistic skill that went into this (in a very short time frame, it sounds like!) - this is exactly what I try to achieve with my character models. Kudos to you (despite the choice of subject)!!

Just one question for a ya, mate: Why do you hate showing studs so much? Mmm, you fear them, don't you. Do not fear the nasty little studs. Let them pass through you. Be one with the studs, and they will reward you...

Down like a clown

Apologies for the posting blackout - I was striken rather badly with the flu plague last Friday and am only just now starting to regain my faculties.

So needless to say I have little energy to devise a cunning Lego-themed April Fools Day prank like the dudes over the Brothers Brick did today! (Well, I suppose I could have 'Timmy' to do a guest post about Clone Wars battle scenes ...hmph, maybe next year)

Instead, here is a little gem from Count Blockula (you know, the other Lego Hawking guy, nudge wink). This captures exactly how I feel, on this normally frivolous cultural holiday...

You just know what's in the bottle, don't you. Its meths.
