No, they're really fun guys

The moment I saw these excellently crafted Myconids by Steve Vargo (aka colon-Jovian-colon), I was immediately propelled into a Vietnam-style flashback of my geeky youth. Or as I like to refer to it the "Dungeons and Dragons and Atari and No Sign of Girls years".



For me they invoked the classic illustrations of artist Erol Otus, who's distinctive work positively saturated all of the D&D material of the day. Here's his rendition of myconids from the adventure in which they first appeared ("In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords")...



Wow. Well, if you ever wondered if it was actually possible to trip on 'shrooms just by looking at pictures of them... THEORY CONFIRMED!
