Best of 2012

Forgive my brevity but God help me I'm on an iPad...

Here are my personal favorites from all of the wonderful character MOCs featured here or on TBB over the past year (excluding my own feeble efforts). So a tip-o-the-hat, in no particular order, goes out to: Shannon Sproule, Andrew Lee, Barney Main, and ccy_8086 (...IG-88's better looking cousin?)

Here's to the entertaining year just passed, and to the one that now lies before us, waiting to be filled with more LEGO goodness.

Bossy Boots

Rod says he was inspired by ME to give character building a go for the "Like a Boss" contest! What can I say? I always thought my purpose in life would be to serve as a warning to others.

Zelda-tastic! I think he pretty much nails it.

Finders Keepers!

Bilbo finds a new toy. Gollum gets all precious about it.

I always felt the One Ring from the official LEGO sets was ridiculously out-of-scale with the mini-figs, so I thought I'd create some that were the right size. Consider this my contribution to Hobbitmania!

But wait, there's more!

This build was new for me in several ways. Firstly, I actually have a decent camera now (wOOt!). Secondly, I experimented with a Super Secret Color Changing Technique to create Gollum's flesh tone. And thirdly, I kept a visual record of the entire build, from beginning to end. These topics will be the subject of some special posts here on The Living Brick in the New Year.

This will definitely be my last build of 2012. So enjoy the holidays, and enjoy The Hobbit!

Tonight's can of awesome is sprayed lovingly into your eyes by H.Y. Leung, who was so inspired by Joris Blok's LEGO version of Nyan Cat, that he decided to go one step further and make it m-o-v-e.

Human Nature

Apparently rack911 believes the best way to promote the plight of endangered species is to depict them looking like they are recieving an enema from Pucca and Garu. An adorably cute enema. I approve.

"You can't be me on the grade!"

What's that you say, "But Iain why are you featuring vehicles? This is a character-themed blog!" to which I I might reply "Fuck off, and the horse you rode in on!". Because in my mind, these actually are characters! So there. They were the stars of a deviously simple low-budget movie from the 70's called Duel, by a then-unknown director named Steven Spielberg. Look it up, kids.

By my only-very-slightly-car-obsessed friend Tim Inman (aka rabidnovaracer)...

Hey, no worms on the bed!

After over 100 episodes in 2½ years, I think it's fair to say that Adventure Time with Finn and Jake is now firmly ensconsed into cartoon/comic culture (just check out the Flickr group if you have any lingering doubts). And this LEGO rendition of the bio-dynamic duo by ccy_8086 is awesome. Kinda makes my feeble efforts in this area seem all the more... feeble!

And if you wanna see what Pendleton Ward and his gang get up to when not constrained by the limits of cable television, don't forget to check out their new show Bravest Warriors! It's like Adventure Time in space, but 20% more drug-induced.
